The Printer's Slump

The printing blues I have felt for almost a year didn't take hold right as the pandemic hit. Rather it was like a slow burn. When things 'got crazy' many lives and occupations shifted, we altered or obliterated as people knew them.I wasn't afforded with a ton of extra time or anything like many people were in the beginning of the pandemic. And this isn't a complaint - it's a comparison. I'm grateful I was able to keep my job and resume a life that was not incredibly different than pre-pandemic times. But the grind of the the daily hum drum...

Golding Jobber No 7 Serial Number and Age

Golding Jobber No 7 Serial Number and Age

This is my first press in which I could print commercial-grade work. It was manufactured around 1923 or 1924, but the records are very sparse and letterpress historians are few and far between to confirm the history of smaller companies like Golding. More widely known for platen presses is the Chandler and Price company and also, Heidelberg. To get the best approximation I contacted Steve Sax and this was his reply:I got out the original serial number log book to check. It turns out that the last entry for the Jobber 7 is 3763, with a date around 1917 or 1918....

New Work - Letterpress Business Cards for a Train Photographer

New Work - Letterpress Business Cards for a Train Photographer

Just wrapped up printing some duplexed biz cards for f_u_z_z - a long-time friend, retired pro skater, turned amazing photographer! Super happy working with friends on projects that are way more fun than work. We used gmundpaper Sun Glow for the Rio Grande color vibe along with Gmund Ebony for the back. Also very helpful Jeremy is a photographer so I got to use some legit shots and not my own for a change.  Go check out f_u_z_z for some excellent train and nature photography!

Greeting Card Sale — a la Covid19

Greeting Card Sale — a la Covid19

Hello! Thanks for stopping by! As you know all too well now, there isn't one person or business who is not affected by Covid19. And there's no shortage of information overload. In fact, if you are reading this, I feel like I have won — albeit, a small win. So many people are vying for your attention and for all of us to pitch in and help the many of us who are taking a hit.Letterpress is not likely considered essential. But connecting with people is. I'd like to see if greeting cards would help bridge that gap a little. You...

Letterpress Workshop on a Beautiful Saturday

Letterpress Workshop on a Beautiful Saturday

Spring really seems to want to show up this past week! The clocks spring forward tonight so queue the adjustment period. But today I hosted an on-demand, private letterpress lesson and I really loved how the workshop participant embraced what it is to see the plus side of imperfection — a.k.a. almost everything in letterpress printing and I mean that in the best way possible. When I have completely new-to-letterpress students I make sure (and most have an idea) that they can expect imperfections and to embrace the less-than-perfect and appreciate the hand-crafted quality and results that surface as a result...

Letterpress Event in Denver — Thursday, Feb. 20 2020

From the Letterpress Depot site: The history of itinerant printers is as old as the history of printing itself; movable type being moved by peripatetic practitioners of the black art. In this talk, the nomadic lifestyle of journeymen printers is examined critically and comically, and careful consideration is given to the indispensable role tramps played in the dissemination of information, techniques, and knowledge. The Itinerant Printer (aka, Chris Fritton) shares stories and images from his journeys on the road, along with an overview of the cities, shops, and institutions to come. Show and tell with the postcards and prints that have...
